The short answer is yes, absolutely! CA Honeypot and nukeSPAM™ can be used together to form multiple barriers against spammers and other malicious "visitors."

CA Honeypot checks incoming traffic (specifically, the IP address) against the Project Honeypot database to block access to the site. Project Honeypot provides multiple services, including an IP blacklist, to prevent malicious access. It has proven to be very effective when integrated with RavenNuke™ and is available today from Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login!

nukeSPAM™ can be configured to check username, email address and / or IP address against know spammer databases and IP blacklists (including Project Honeypot) on registration (and, later, feedback / contact us). It has also proven to be very effective at blocking spammer registration. It is not recommended that you use nukeSPAM™ to check Project Honeypot if you are using CA Honeypot since CA Honeypot would have already checked that before a visitor could attempt to register or submit feedback / contact us.

Are these tools 100% accurate, individually or when used together? Unfortunately, no. It's possible to circumvent both tools by spoofing the IP address, username or email address. But these tools make it more expensive for malicious visitors to succeed.

The most effective approach to preventing spam might be content filtering done through services like Akismet (it's much more difficult to spoof content!). Though there are issues with content filtering, tools like Nuken's Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login!, which is now integrated into Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login!™, can leverage this service through its Disqus comment function.

You should consider all these options when devising and implementing a strategy to minimize your efforts to keep your site spam-free and safe from other malicious visitors.
